BENJAMIN FRANKLIN is perhaps the most famous figure of colonial America, and he embodied as well as preached those virtues of hard work and thrift which have come to be regarded as distinctively American. He was horn in Boston of a poor family, was mostly self-educated, moved to Philadelphia, and there began his long career as printer, writer, publisher, scholar, inventor, scientist, and statesman. He was fond of giving advice in his fellow Americans, and there are many examples of it in his two principal literary works, his Autobiography and Poor Rrichard’s Almanack.
