自从杨利伟表示他在太空没有看见长城之后,能否“从太空看见长城”这个问题遂引起社会各界的争论,很多人非理性地质疑部分科学家的结论,甚至认为“太空中看不到长城伤害了民族感情”。北京大学社会心理学家夏学銮教授曾表示:“对这个问题的热切关注反映了人们的民族心态。”他认为,长久以来,人们把长城视作中华民族的象征,出于这种情结,人们更倾向于相信太空中可以看到长城。我们不禁要追问,中国人为什么会有“长城情结”?长城又是怎样被国人赋予了这么深厚的文化含义?
