决斗最早兴起于中世纪早期的西欧,后来传入其他地区,直到第一次世界大战前后才绝迹。十八世纪,随着彼得大帝的改革,欧洲的思想文化和社会习俗迅速进入俄罗斯,决斗的风气便由此逐渐在俄罗斯贵族中蔓延开来。决斗从此不仅仅出现在俄罗斯社会生活中,更是作为一种独特的现象出现在很多俄罗斯文学作品中。一代文豪列夫·托尔斯泰的长篇小说《战争与和平》中就描写了“决斗”的情节。
The duel first emerged in Western Europe in the early Middle Ages, and later spread to other regions before it disappeared before the First World War.
