1996年第15号强台风于9月9日上午11时在湛江港附近沿海地区登陆,台风中心横扫湛江市。这次台风,风力强,来势猛,破坏力大,根据气象台实测,风速达41—57米/秒,合110节（63节为12级风）。强台风持续肆虐4个小时,给当地工农业生产和人民生活造成严重破坏,各行各业都蒙受巨大的经济损失。据湛江港灾后不完全统计,该港直接经济损失达1.68亿元。装卸机械受到严重破坏,6台自重200多吨的门吊和1台自重500多吨的集装箱桥吊被风刮下海,另有6台被风吹倒摔坏。4台门吊巴杆折断跌落,6台门吊严重变形。31
