在苏联和其他国家正日益广泛地采用铝合金和各种塑料作建筑材料。特别是近10-15年来,合成材料和塑料的生产发展尤为迅速,应用范围也更为广泛。这些材料与一般建筑材料(砖、混凝土、钢筋混凝土等)相比,具有较高的物理机械性能和防蚀性能,构件的连接和加工工艺也较简单。由于有大量的廉价原料可资利用,以及生产工艺的日益改进,塑料的生产成本也在逐年显著降低。全世界塑料及有色金属(主要是铝)总产量的预计增长情况如下表:
