早在一九二四年,老教育家叶圣陶就在《教育杂志》十六卷第六号写了一篇题为《说话训练》的专论,并且特地以“产生与发表的总枢纽”作为这篇万言长文的副标题,把说话训练作为语文教学的总枢纽提出来,显示了这位教育家独特而又精辟的见解。新中国成立以后,叶老在谈到语文教学时明确指出:“语就是口头语言,文就是书面语言”。“口头为‘语’,书面为‘文’。文本于语,不可偏指”,语文教学“‘听’‘说’‘读’‘写’宜并重”。在这里,他不仅给“语文”下了一个确切的定义,还把学习口头语言作为语文教学的重要任务提了出来。
