张学良为什么要去南京?在西安事变中,有一些事情很难解释,不同的人也有不同的说法。目前缺少进一步的证据,因而没有定论……当时,杨虎城就极力劝说,而周恩来更是特别赶到机场打算把张学良追回来,但张学良声称要负起一个军人的职责和义务,最终还是护送蒋介石前往南京。根据张学良后来自己的说法,随蒋去南京完全是他的个人决定,没有任何人影响到他。他认为兵谏蒋介石的“祸”是他闯的,他做为一军统帅,有义务为手下兵士负责,不应该由于他一个人的举动而牵连全军官兵。
