美国南方女作家卡森.麦卡勒斯的作品用怪诞的表现手法,生动地描写生理残缺和心理变态的南方平民,被称为“南方哥特式小说”。麦卡勒斯也因此成为美国当代文坛重要而独特的作家之一。但麦卡勒斯本人并不赞同这种观点,她自己断言她的创作方法是象征现实主义的。笔者认为,麦卡勒斯的小说不是完全意义上的哥特式风格,当然也不属于我们所理解的现实主义作品,本文拟从小说的地点背景,人物性格,情节氛围三个方面将《伤心咖啡馆之歌》与传统的哥特式小说的风格进行比较,指出不同的所在,并深入探讨象征主义与现实主义是如何有机统一于整个作品,服务于主题——揭示具有抽象寓意的人类孤独处境的主题,及对美国南方工业社会的批判的现实主题。
