当一架飞机在大气层内飞行时,由边界层产生的摩擦阻力会增加飞机的燃油消耗。一架常规亚声速运输机的表面摩擦阻力大约会消耗所需燃油量的一半,而对一架未来超声速运输机而言,表面摩擦阻力也有可能会消耗1/3以上的燃油。通过层流控制技术减小边界层摩擦阻力,对于提高民用运输机的经济性有极大的诱惑力。
