This chapter discusses the method of understanding and explaining lexical meaning. Based on the connection between the semantic minimum theory and Chomsky’s semantics of internalism, the author deeply analyzes and refutes the arguments of internal theory opposed to the referential interpretation, and proposes that the theory of the minimum is actually implicitly holding the theory of allegation in general position. To the author of this book, if we want to go deep into the semantic level from the syntactic level to reveal the semantic norms, we must pay attention to the objective world instead of focusing on the mind. Word meaning can be understood as a separate, context-independent entity. Such entities can be combined according to the syntax to express propositions that can be judged as authentic.
