商城县在北宋初年被废为镇,并入固始县,直到明成化十一年才重置为县,历史上对于宋初此县废为镇并入固始县的时间记载不明,《宋史·地理志》、《元丰九域志》、《宋朝事实》等史书不载废之具体年份,最新的《中国行政区划通史·宋西夏卷》亦言应是宋初之事,但《宋会要辑稿·方域一二》中载建隆元年(960)是废县时间,两本现存最早的地方志载是至道三年(997),本文参考以上史料及其他相关史料,考证“建隆元年”说是可信的,“至道三年”说完全是后人的杜撰。
