Objective To investigate the relationship between essential hypertension (EH), hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (CH) and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene I / D polymorphism and serum ACE levels. Methods The leukocyte DNA was extracted from 29 healthy individuals (NC group), 28 healthy individuals (EH group) and 31 healthy individuals (CH group). The ACE genotypes, alleles and serum levels were determined. Results There were significant differences in serum ACE levels between different ACE genotypes in 88 cases (DD> ID> II, P <0.01). There was no significant difference in DD genotype and D gene frequency between EH group and NC group (P> 0.05). Serum ACE levels and D gene frequencies in CH group were significantly higher than those in NC group and EH group (P <0.01). The serum ACE level in DD group was also higher than that in the latter two groups (P <0. 0 5). Conclusion ACE gene polymorphism and serum levels have no relation with EH, but with CH. D gene may be the relative risk factors for the incidence of cerebral hemorrhage in hypertensive patients.
