In order to increase the liquidity of the stock market and enhance the international competitiveness of Hong Kong’s financial markets, the HKEx intends to extend the trading hours of the stock and futures markets in all aspects. It proposes to cancel the lunch break, extend the afternoon close and set up night trading sessions respectively. Once all the recommendations have been fully implemented, the trading hours in the Hong Kong stock and futures markets will be transformed from the shortest in the world to the longest in the world. According to the consultation paper published by the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, if the proposal to extend the three trading hours is fully implemented, the trading hours in the local stock market will be trading at 10 p.m. and continuing trading till 6 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. In other words, Hong Kong stocks traded a total of 11 hours a day, 4 days less than the current daily turnover
