In the range of automatic target recognition, the fusion of the sensor level is more effective than the fusion of the pixel level to accomplish the target detection and recognition. This article details the pros and cons of imaging hybrid sensor systems with forward-looking infrared (FLIR) and lidar (LADAR) sensors and proposes a dual-mode-sensitive architecture for this hybrid system. The process of using this hybrid system to detect and identify targets is also explored in detail in this article.
