Under the joint mission of missionary needs, liberal theology and social gospel movement, Protestant missionaries in China from the early 1890s to the late 1930s launched a Western literary translation campaign to enlighten Chinese women. Based on literature, missionaries enlighten Chinese women in modern thought through social responsibility, self-awareness, marriage and family, and make them think about their situation and their role. The translation and interpretation of Enlightenment literature reconciled the ideas of Christian faith and modernity, introduced the ideas and cultures very different from the feudal traditions of China under the spiritual coordinate system of Christianity, and played an active role in the modern enlightenment of Chinese women.
