在我国清代藏书史上,“铁琴铜剑楼”久负盛名,享誉海内外,其藏书史迹见诸多种史籍记载,为后人所敬仰。今就楼名之缘由作一考证,以正源委。从前人的记述来看,铁琴铜剑楼名称有三次变化:原名恬裕斋,同治十三年(1874年)因避清帝讳改名敦裕堂,1898年更名铁琴铜剑楼。此为《中国著名藏书家传略》所载;又如《辞海》等工具书均含糊为“其藏书处初名恬裕斋,后改名‘铁琴铜剑楼’。”
