安徽省巢县一带是苏、皖长江沿岸海相三迭系发育较好的地区之一。因与江苏宁镇山脉同期地层沉积相似,故已往多将这一地层与宁镇山脉青龙群对比,时代定为早三迭世。中国科学院南京地质古生物研究所、安徽省地质局有关地质队及华东地质科学研究所等单位,先后在宁镇山脉及安徽铜陵、怀宁、贵池等地的三迭系做过许多工作,由于采到当时认为是中三迭世安尼锡期的菊石,从而将其时代改定为早、中三迭世,并进一步分为若干组。
