This article reports the changes in rat arterial cAMP system during experimental atherosclerosis. This change may affect arterial endothelial permeability and play a role in the development and progression of atherosclerotic lesions. Thirteen male Wistar rats were experimentally fed with atherogenic diet for 6 months, and another six rats were fed with standard diet. After the animals were decapitated, a section of the aorta was taken for histochemical examination and the rest was frozen in liquid nitrogen and three types of homogenates were prepared for (1) cAMP (2) assayed by radioimmunoassay for the determination of (a) Adenosyl cyclase (AC), (b) phosphodiesterase (PDE).
