在各种运输方式中,美国是一个面向公路交通的国家,公路网和汽车运输十分发达。全国公路通车里程达624万公里,每千人的路网密度为29.62公里。拥有各种汽车1.6亿辆,平均1.4人一辆汽车。汽车货运已实现集装箱化。美国的公路交通可以概括为以下几个特点: (一) 公路纵横成网,四通八达美国公路的发展,除1838年到1980年期间,由于铁路的兴起,使公路交通运输处于滞缓而外,其余年代,公路交通随着汽车工业的技术改革,不断发展,人们对于公路交通一直有着强烈的需求。美国政府近五十年来一直采取鼓励发展公路的方针,所以,公路交通发展很快,目前路网密度相当高(表1)。
