Functional dyspepsia(FD)is a highly prevalent butheterogeneous disorder in which multiple pathogeneticmechanisms are involved.Although there are manystudies that have investigated various pathophysiologicmechanisms, the underlying casual pathways associatedwith FD remain obscure. The currently proposedpathophysiologic mechanisms associated with FD includegenetic susceptibility, delayed as well as acceleratedgastric emptying, visceral hypersensitivity to acid ormechanical distention, impaired gastric accommodation, abnormal fundic phasic contractions, abnormal antro-duodenal motility, acute and chronic infections, andpsychosocial comorbidity.A greater understanding ofthe abnormalities underlying FD may lead to improvedmanagement. The aim of this editorial is to provide acritical overview of current pathophysiologic concepts infunctional dyspepsia.
