SUN hopes to expand its Java-based NC market with a packaged solution that bundles software and hardware bundles. Although the current Sparc processors, motherboards, and server software are now available from separate sources, SUN’s Microelectronics is planning to release its part packaging program called JavaEngine-1 by the end of the year. The kit for more than 10,000 wholesale price of 385 US dollars / set, including the motherboard, a 100MHz Sparc processor, chipsets and ASICs, and network computer server software. Other applications (such as HotJavaViews and other Java applications) are available from Sun and its distribution channels. The system designed based on this kit will be available by the end of this year and is expected to enter a phase of rapid development next year. JavaEngine-1 will target manufacturers of Unix and Windows NT systems as well as NC equipment manufacturers such as POS systems and retail kiosk equipment that SUN calls “special-purpose” applications.
