吴征镒,1916年6月13日出生在江苏扬州一个书香仕宦之家。父亲吴启贤任过北洋政府农商部主事和江苏省议员。小吴征镒自幼就从“看图识字”的方字块上认识一些花草树木,父亲的书房中有部《植物名实图考》,书内的植物画图深深地吸引了小征镒,一天,他拿着书,跑到后花园里跟眼前的花草一一对照,竟然忘记了吃饭,妈妈找了好长时间才找到他。五六岁的吴征镒已经能够叫出100多种植物的名称并说出它们的生活习性了,这为他日后从事的研究奠定
