According to the latest Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists at Johns Hopkins University discovered a bacterium that selectively attacks advanced tumors in mice. Advanced tumors usually have weak and hypoxic areas of blood circulation. Hypoxia allows advanced tumors to be more resistant to conventional chemotherapies and radiation therapies, but open to anaerobes that grow anaerobically. Therefore, scientists would like to take advantage of the anaerobic characteristics of anaerobic bacteria, leading them to act directly on large tumor cells that have died or are dying. “Our idea is to use this bacterium to attack the tumor internally and to use chemotherapy to attack it from the exterior,” said Bert Vogelstein, MD, a professor of oncology at Hughes Medical School at Harvard University. Scientists have systematically screened innumerable bacterial species to find bacteria that can grow in anoxic environments with damaging effects on surrounding tumor cells. In the end, they targeted the bacteria that breed spores - Clostridium novyi (C. novyi). Under normal circumstances,
