托马斯·杰斐逊是美国历史上最博学、最勤奋的思想家和政治家之一,是他那个时代最为真诚的新闻自由主义者。杰斐逊的新闻自由思想主要缘起于自然权利学说和限权政府理论,与其民主理论和哲学理念一脉相承。他从捍卫民主的角度指出新闻自由是监督政府、启发民智的有力保障。在其总统任内,杰斐逊极力推动《权利法案》的通过,极力捍卫新闻自由等权利,用行动实践了自己的新闻自由主义理论。
Thomas Jefferson, one of the most knowledgeable and industrious thinkers and politicians in American history, was the most sincere press liberator of his time. Jefferson’s freedom of the press mainly originated from the theory of natural rights and the government of limited rights, which is the same as his theory of democracy and philosophy. From the perspective of safeguarding democracy, he pointed out that freedom of the press is a powerful guarantee for supervising the government and enlightening the wisdom of the people. During his presidency, Jefferson pushed vigorously for the passage of the Bill of Rights, strongly defend the rights of freedom of the press and practiced his own theory of press liberalism with his actions.
