镇海为宁波市组合型城区三大片之一,地处东海之滨的甬江入海口,东临舟山群岛,西连宁绍平原,毗邻深水良港北仑港,北扼杭州湾,自古就是对外经济交往重要的贸易港口。早在北宋淳化三年(公元992年),杭州之两浙路市舶司曾迁于此达4年之久。此后,元、明、清各朝也相继设立过类似海关的管理机构。同时,镇海素有“浙东门户”、“海天雄镇”之称,是我国重要的海防要地。自公元486年起历朝都在镇海驻军,在县境近200里海岸线上设置卫城、戍所、关隘、汛地等军事设施多处,烽台昼烟夜火互相接应。全长4800米、始建于唐代的后海塘就是其中有代表性的见证。镇海先后经历了抗倭、抗英、抗法和抗日4次闻名中外的反侵略战争的战火洗礼,在我国抵抗外来侵略史上留下了悲壮的一页。特别是在抗法战争中,镇海名扬四海,威震欧洲。1885年3月1日,法国侵略军5艘装甲巡洋舰(最多时达10余艘)由远东舰队总司令孤拔带队攻击镇海。镇海军民众志成城,同仇敌忾,奋起抗击,经过历时103天的战斗,重创法国远东舰队,击毙法国远东舰队总司令孤拔,取得了鸦片战争以来我国反侵略战争首次重大的胜利。
