This paper first traces back to the two main approaches to the introduction of classical Chinese poetry into the West at the beginning of this century, and then analyzes the examples of mistranslated Chinese poetry. In the process of translating Chinese poetry, the imagist poets reinforced the use of imagery in Chinese poetry, yet failed to convey the complex rhyme and cultural connotation of Chinese poetry in the translation of poetry. On the basis of this, the author compares the different understandings of “poetic” between Chinese and western poetic theories and concludes that Chinese classical poetry provides the imagist with a tough, concise and vivid example of poem, The emergence of imagery has its own inherent social and historical background. We can not ignore the influence of Chinese poetry when we talk about the origins of the literature of the imagist school, but we can not simply exaggerate the role of Chinese poetry.
