Personal file Jack Welch was born on November 19, 1935 in Salem, Massachusetts. 1957 Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1960 and joined GE in the same year. 1971 GE Chemical and Metallurgy Division general manager. In 1979 August, became vice chairman of GE. In April 1981, became GE’s youngest Chairman and CEO in history. He lives now
