The three world-renowned vendors IBM, Sony and Toshiba recently unveiled to the industry a little-known secret co-development program known as Cell’s multi-core processor technology. This is a new multimedia processor, advocated by developers as “a supercomputer on the chip.” According to IBM, it will not only enable Sony’s next-generation gaming console PS3 to have superior computing capabilities, but will also be adopted by IBM’s high-performance servers in the near future. Prior to Cell, similar multi-core processor technologies such as SOC, IBM Power4 and Sum MAJC were either available or not, and the Cell project was announced shortly after protagonist Intel announced its development at IDF, just ended in California, USA Dual-Core Itanium processor program. Is this a coincidence, or the beginning of a fierce competition between chip giants on this futuristic technology?
