Objective: To study the expression and significance of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and microvessel density (MVD) in human ameloblastoma (ABs). Methods: Immunohistochemical SP method was used to detect the expression of TAMs-specific marker CD68 and microvessel marker CD34 in 101 cases of ABs and 26 cases of normal oral mucosa. Quantitative analysis was performed. SPSS11.5 software package was used for t test and Pearson correlation coefficient test. Results: TAMs and MVD were mainly distributed in the stroma of ABs. The counts of TAMs and MVD in ABs (total), primary ABs and recurrent ABs were significantly higher than those in normal mucosa (P <0.05) , MVD counts increased with the increase of TAMs counts, showing a significant positive correlation (r = 0.428, P <0.05). Conclusion: In ABs, TAMs may be involved in angiogenesis and may play an important role in the development of ABs.
