There are at least three schistosomes that can infect humans in Southeast Asia, and they are Schistosoma japonicum, Schistosoma mansoni, and the newly discovered Schistosoma mansoni. Schistosoma japonicum found in a local area of Peninsular Malaysia, the main parasitic in rats, but also parasitic on the human body. Based on the phylogeny and biogeography of the intermediate host spirochetes, Davis proposed that S. schistosomiasis and S. mansoni are sister strains of S. japonicum in their classification.
