From a business perspective, the North American box office hit a record high in 2000 with a total revenue of 7.7 billion U.S. dollars, up 2.67 percent from the 7.5 billion U.S. dollars in 1999. This is also the second consecutive year in North America box office more than 7 billion US dollars. At a time when Hollywood is celebrating high profits and champagne, most American film critics think last year was America’s worst movie of nearly 70 years. Indeed, in terms of artistic standards, the 2000 American films are not a bleak year. Poor film, the traditional mainstream blockbuster masterpiece, but instead of foreign language films, independent producers and low-cost films and animation outstanding performance. Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” won the Best Director of the Global Awards and the best foreign language film, becoming the biggest winner that is the best proof. It seems that the first Oscars in the new century may be one of the weakest years in its history. The strong contrast of this “poor” and “rich” can not help but disappoint the huge blockbuster art blockbusters, and heralded a gloomy outlook for the Hollywood movie industry in 2001. Of course, in the course of the year, after all, there are still some remarkable works that appear in our field of vision.
