周有光先生今年已108岁了。中学时他经历了“五四”运动;1925年在读大学二年级时,经历了“五卅惨案”;1933年东渡日本京都大学求学;1934年返国后,在江苏银行工作并在光华大学兼职任教;1946年受聘于新华银行,被派往美国长驻办理业务。在美期间,他到大学听课,图书馆学习,对美国的文化教育极为倾慕;1949年时,周有光完全有机会驻留在美国,但他决定回国参加新中国的建设;1956年改行从事文字改革研究后,在此领域有很大的建树,曾任中美文化交流项目“不列颠百科全书”中文版的三个总编篡之一。文革以后,周有光完成了从一个左倾民主爱国者向自由民主爱国者的回归与转变,他认识到民主与科学的关联,所以他得出了科学的一元性,文化的双重性。他还总结出:人类思维、文化从神学、玄学到科学的三个层次,制度从神权、君权到民权等走势。他对中国百年的历史是一个活的见证,他的诚实、智慧和学贯中西的学识,历经中国四个朝代所思所悟,是中国最应珍视宝贵的经验,是中国文化的瑰宝。
Mr. Zhou Youguang is 108 years old this year. In high school he experienced “May 4th ” movement; in 1925 in sophomore year, experienced “five ” massacre “; 1933 East to Kyoto University in Japan to study; in 1934 after returning home, working in Jiangsu Bank And part-time teaching Guanghua University; employed in 1946 Xinhua Bank, was sent to the United States to stay in business. During the United States, he went to college to attend lectures and study in the library and greatly admired the United States’ cultural and educational education. In 1949, Zhou Youguang had a complete chance of residing in the United States, but he decided to return to China to participate in the construction of new China. After the study, there was a great deal of accomplishment in this field. He was one of the three chief editors of the Sino-American cultural exchange program ”Encyclopedia Britannica". After the Cultural Revolution, Zhou Youguang completed the return and transformation from a leftist democratic patriot to a free and democratic patriot. He recognized the connection between democracy and science. Therefore, he came to the scientific unity and cultural dualism. He also summarized: human thinking, culture from theology, metaphysics to science at three levels, the system from the theocracy, monarchy to civil rights and other trends. He is a living witness to the history of China for a hundred years. His honesty, wisdom and knowledge of both China and the West have been comprehended by the four dynasties in China. He is the treasure China should cherish preciously and treasure of Chinese culture.
