如果说,“一个伟大的小说家必然是一个伟大的道德家”这句话有些绝对的话,那么,说一个伟大的小说家必然是一个关心道德问题的人,想来应该是一个妥实的判断。确实,伟大作家的作品,大都具有可靠的、稳定的道德立场,大都包含着能够对他的时代,不,应该说,对一切时代,都足以产生积极影响的巨大的道德力量。一句话,正是由于道德的高尚,一个作家才足称伟大;正是由于道德的健康,一部作品才堪称优秀,才有可能不朽。
If there is some absolute truth in the remark that “a great novelist must be a great moralist,” then it must be a proper judgment to say that a great novelist must be a man who cares about moral problems. Indeed, most of the works of great writers have a credible and stable moral stance, most of which contains a tremendous moral force capable of exerting a positive influence on all of their time, not, and should be said, for all ages. In short, it is precisely because of the noble morality that a writer can only claim greatness. It is precisely because of moral health that a work is excellent and immortal.
