在1999年度中国基础科学研究“十大新闻”中,80％的研究项目都不同程度得到科学基金的资助。其中“储氢纳米管研究”和“中国古生物研究”取得了多项重大发现和进展。 1999年我国科学家在世界有影响的科学杂志上发表文章数增加,在《Nature》上发表的文章由1998年的9篇上升到14篇,其中有13篇得到国家自然科学基金资助;光学学科领域受基金资助的课题在《Science》上发表文章是本学科发表论文影响因子最高的;生命科学领域受基金资助的课题在《Cell》上发表1篇论文,也是近年来我国科学家在如此高影响因子刊物上发表论文所罕见的。
