The formation rules of CaCu_5 and ThMn_12 intermetallic compounds in rare earth-containing ternary system are summarized and discussed by pattern recognition-chemical bond parameter method, and the more reliable formation criterion is proposed. The prediction of ternary compound formation of the new study was made by using the formation criterion.
