哈佛版《新美国文学史》在叙史的体例、思路、方法等方面开辟了文学史书写的新范式。它具有如下五个特点：第一,秉持文化视野的文学观。文学内涵大大扩容,模糊了文学与文化的边界;第二,体现了后现代主义文化去分化的理念;第三,主张文学史的建构观。第四,拆解总体性历史元叙事,强调历史横断面的小叙事;第五,重视文学接受的考察。辨析该书文学史观念的思想依据,有利于更深刻理解其知识背景与历史语境,并且对这种文学史观念进行必要的批判性反思。
