Japan’s long-standing friction with the United States in the area of trade has evolved into an increasingly fierce conflict in recent years, which in turn has led to a quarrel between the two countries in other fields. Even the leaders of the two countries have sometimes been caught up in the vortex of opposition. Japanese Prime Minister Miyazawa Yasuhiro and some other Japanese politicians recently publicly attacked Americans as “lazy,” lacking a sense of work ethic and claiming that it was the real cause of a huge deficit in U.S. trade with Japan as a result of the lack of competitiveness of U.S. products. These statements have further deteriorated the relations between the two countries. Some pessimistic commentators in both Japan and the United States have come to the ominous conclusion that the long-standing partnership between Japan and the United States has faced a crisis and even slipped to collapse
