Halogenated butyl rubber has been selected as the polymer for the production of tire innerliners due to its excellent gas-tightness, moisture barrier and flex fatigue resistance. Tire pressure generally affects the tire’s rolling resistance, tread wear, handling and durability. Tire pressure retention (IPR) is a major indicator of tire durability. Different amounts of halogenated butyl rubber were used in combination with natural rubber to make different innerliners and the performance of the tires made with these innerliners was compared. Indoor drum simulation results show that the use of 100 phr halogenated butyl rubber in the inner liner compound gives the tire ideal tire pressure maintenance, low internal pressure of the carcass (ICP) and improved tire durability . The analysis of damaged tires shows that halogenated butyl rubber is effective in protecting other selected components of the tire.
