The Mathematics Curriculum Standard states that students should be “engaged in specific mathematical activities to gain some initial experience of the characteristics of objects in specific contexts.” For example, it’s hard to swallow 15 grams of salt in front of you, but if you put 15 grams of salt in a delicious soup, you’re all about absorbing 15 grams of salt while enjoying your meal.
