Among the factors that have a direct impact on soil frost heave, the solid particles of the soil (mineral composition, grain size) are an important aspect. For sandy soil, this important factor is mainly manifested in the grain size composition, and the most strongly affected is the content of powder clay. China’s “Code for Design of Foundations for Industrial and Civil Buildings (TJ7-74)” stipulates that the criterion for frost heaving of fine sands is: as long as the content of particles larger than 0.1 mm exceeds 85% of the total weight, regardless of other conditions (moisture content, groundwater) How do you think that it is not frost heaving (the “standard” preparation shows that the frost heave coefficient K ≤ 1%), otherwise determined by the silt. Although the influence of the particle size component is also emphasized here, there is no further explanation for the remaining part of the particle size smaller than 0.1 mm (including sand grains and clay particles).
