Since early 1950, the standard coating systems used on Canadian buses and locomotives are based on alkyd resins. This coating system consisting of a neutral oil alkyd primer and a modified easy-to-polish alkyd enamel has been listed as Canadian National Railway standards and has undergone extensive quality reliability tests. Paint used for recoating or surface coating should be able to air-dry within 8 hours. In 1960, a set of solutions including new color charts and logos for passenger cars and locomotives were redesigned. For passenger cars, black is still the primary color, but with light gray, the logo is changed to a bright orange. The basic color of the locomotive is black with a bright orange car end and light gray logo. The result is more frequent cleaning due to dust or dirt, especially in the light gray areas of buses.
