矫大羽从小就把节省下来的零用钱用于购买各式古老的钟表,从此也就开始了收藏和研究古董钟表的历程。40多年过去了,童年的爱好成就了一项事业,而他本人也成为国际著名的古董钟表收藏家和鉴赏家。在香港举行的两次国际性古董表大赛中,他的两只藏品都获得了香港地区唯一的头奖:一只是1875年制造的浪琴袋表(Longines),另一只是1900年制造的欧米茄袋表(Omega)。 不仅如此,他的身影还经常出现在国际著名的古董钟表展览以及拍卖会上。尤其值得一提的是,在2001年3月日内瓦举行的前香港汇丰银行的总裁沈弼勋爵的藏品——被称为20世纪最大的古董钟表收藏品之一的拍卖现场,矫大羽是来自世界各地的钟表收藏家中唯一的亚洲竞拍者。在体现这位东方收藏家所具有的超常钟表专业知识和鉴赏力之余,也表露了大师对钟表矢志不渝的挚爱真情。矫大羽在多年的收藏历程中形成了自己特有的收藏观念:“真、精、新”。真,即至少要60年以上的真品;精,于真品中择其精品妥为收藏;新,完整如新,没有残缺或计时不准等问题。
