South Africa is one of the major coal producing countries in the world. In 2000, coal output was 224.3Mt and coal export volume was 68.28Mt, ranking first in the world. South Africa’s coal mine safety is improving. Since the promulgation of the Law on Safety and Health of Mines in 1996, the death toll of 1,000 people in coal mine accidents in South Africa dropped from 0.75 in 1996 to 0.52 in 2000.
