蒲包花颜色鲜艳,花瓣下辱酷似拖鞋,因此外国人称它为“拖鞋花”、“拖鞋草”,它的拉丁属名calceolaria源于calceolarius一词,意为“皮鞋匠”。中国人因其花形像荷包,也叫它“荷包花”。 蒲包花属有300多个种,原产墨西哥以南美洲地区,在安第斯山脉海拔3000米的地方分布尤其多,它们靠昆虫授粉,但用来吸引昆虫的并不是蜜糖,而是一种油性物质,蜜蜂等昆虫常用它来喂养幼虫。蒲包花1733年被引种到欧洲,19世纪广泛应用于园艺栽培和生产,并培育出了许多杂交品种,现在蒲包花在欧美已经商品化生产,主要用作冬春季节室内盆花,少数半灌木状的品种也用十室外栽培,栽培品种从人花型向小花型发展,色彩更丰富,还选育了不少早花和抗热品种,中国早在20世纪30年代就美国引进了蒲包花,但主要用于制作标本和教学,解放后才有少量生产,供应市场,人批量生产则在80年代。
