INTRODUCTION The extremely rare and enduring rapid economic growth experienced by South Korea and Taiwan after World War II has caused great concern among many scholars who study economic development issues. Many scholars tend to analyze the economy of South Korea and Taiwan as one and the same economic phenomenon. Given the fact that both types of economic development are dependent on the markets of Japan and the United States, it is not surprising. However, the same
