儿童心理学家从语言的表达里,研究儿童心理生活的内容,近年来更研究人格发展的性质。各家对语言一词所作含义不同,研究重点因而也不一致。语言的重要性可从儿童讲话前后的心理现象的研究里得出结论。皮尔谢认为语言是儿童表示思想过程的工具。儿童言语的自我中心和社交化互为消长。从机体因素上看:语言能力,女优于男;视觉听觉的缺陷影响语言能力的发展。从环境因素上看:在医院、孤儿院生长的和寄养在外的儿童,语言能力较差;有钱人家的儿童,语言能力较强;单生子、双生子和三生子的语言能力,因为母爱的分散,依次降低;两言儿童的主要语言的发展不及一言儿童。语言能力本身的发展以发音为主要方面;语言发展的速度和智能高低之间的关系最为显著。
