Every journalist sent to the United Nations wants a separate interview with the Secretary-General, but not many of those who won such a chance at more than 450 correspondents based at United Nations headquarters. In my four and a half years, I interviewed the de facto United Nations Secretary-General de Cuéllar three times. This is not my own special charm or PR work, but because I am a reporter from the great China Xinhua News Agency. It is known to all that when only the fifth secretary-general of the 36th General Assembly election in 1981 was involved, there were only two people who started to run for the election: Kurt Waldheim, then Austrian, then in his ten-year role as secretary general, and Tanzania’s diplomacy Minister Salem Ahmed Salim.
