怎样正确地评价太平天国后期重要将领忠王李秀成及其自述,这是一个长期就存在着爭论的老问题。解放以来,我国学术界基本上都肯定李秀成是一个伟大的英雄人物。因此,对于李秀成在自述中背叛革命的表现,人们提出了种种伪降的说法,认为这只是欺骗敌人的一种策略,也有人简单地否认自述的真实性,宣称它是曾国藩假造的。经过了研究和爭辯,特别是由于自述原稿影印本的出版,后一种说法已经很少有人支持了。爭论主要是围绕着各种伪降说进行的。
