山西离石区,战国时为离石邑,西汉置离石县,属西河郡。东汉灵帝末郡县俱废,三国魏黄初二年(221)复置县,北齐天保三年(552)改为昌化县,北周建德六年(577)改石州。明隆庆元年(1567)改为永宁州,万历二十三年(1595)永宁州并入汾州府,清仍之。民国元年(1912)改永宁县,次年复称离石县。1996年撤县设市,2003年由县级市改为市辖区。

In 1996 the county set up the city, in 2003 by the county-level city to municipal districts.
