张相文是中国现代地理学的先驱者之一,早已为人所肯定。但是,他在我国现代地质学萌芽过程中曾起过积极作用,对此则罕为人知。本文以大量事实论证了他在本世纪初期在倡导和促进中国地质学事业方面所做出的贡献,其中包括:他于1908年和1909年分别撰写了我国第一部自然地理学即《新撰地文学》和我国第一部《地质学》教科书;他于1909年创办了我国第一个地学学术团体即“中国地学会”,该会吸收了许多中外地质学者为会员;他于1910年创刊了我国第一种地学学术杂志即《地学杂志》,共出版181期,发表各种文章1520多篇,其中有关地质方面的文章约160篇,各种地质矿产图共22幅。
